new swing

I've been listening to some contemporary swing music lately. That's swinging jazz recorded in the last ten years or so (not so contemporary I know, but it's more recent than the stuff from the 30s). Ironically, some of the stuff I really dig is younger than the neo swing that gets touted about.

I like this kansas city band album (1997) and the new Virus album (2004).

Both are really swingingly good albums. Some is excellent for dancing.

But again, I think about that comment Winton Marsalis' brother made about obsessions with 'classic' jazz (ie 20s-50s stuff): it makes it harder for new jazz musicians to get albums released and bought if they have to compete with dead doods. But I guess that's another argument again: neither hard core oldskool swing fans nor neoswing fan dancers would be particularly keen on dancing to that marsalis brother's music...
